HALF
MOON BAY HIGH SCHOOL ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
Although it occupies a promontory with beautiful view of the Pacific
Ocean, this 1950-era school was lacking in architectural distinction.
The client’s initial vision was to add new classrooms, art
rooms, science labs and computer labs in different locations on
campus.
Instead of that approach, which dilutes the transformational
impact of new construction, the design team pulls all new spaces
together in a single two-story structure, in front of the existing
campus. The building is laid out in an arc shape, following the
site topography and taking maximum advantage of the view. A curved
mansard roof hides the mechanical well from the front. The top
end of the mansard roof disappears beyond normal sight line from
below, creating the illusion of a full curved roof. The building
instantly transforms the curb appeal of this campus, providing
a modern and sophisticated image. |
